Honest long-term reviews from someone who actually owns the thing
Hi, I’m Elliot. Everything reviewed here was bought with my own money and gets used, properly, in my own UK home — some of it for years. No freebies, no sponsored “first impressions”, and nothing I’ve only ever seen in a press photo.
A bit about me
By day I work in software — SaaS, to be precise. I’m not a coder; I manage a team in our key-customer department, which mostly means listening to what people actually need rather than what the brochure says they need. Turns out that’s a handy habit when you’re buying things, too.
I grew up just outside London and now live in rural Northern Ireland, where my partner is from. We moved for a better pace of life and got exactly that, plus two kids, two dogs and a fair amount of mud. If a gadget survives our house, it’ll probably survive yours. Muddy paws and small humans are the reason I care about floor cleaners, and a rural garden is why I care whether a lawn robot can cope with the real world rather than a showroom lawn.
How I buy things
I’ll be honest: I can be an impulsive buyer. Once I spot a need, I tend to fill it fairly quickly. The bigger purchases are different. For anything expensive I disappear into a research rabbit hole for anything from a few days to a couple of weeks, learning everything I can about it: the quirks, the best bits, and how it really stacks up against its closest competitors. By the time I buy, I know why I’m buying it.
I’m also not very good at waiting for sales, unless there’s an obvious one round the corner like Black Friday. My view is simple: if something costs a lot but will genuinely make life better now, I’d rather have the benefit now than save a bit by waiting months for a discount.
Why this site exists
Too many comparison sites, “best of” lists and review pages are glorified adverts dressed up as reviews, there to get you clicking a buy link rather than to help you choose. You can usually tell. They read like a spec sheet, and nobody mentions what it’s like six months in.
This site is the opposite of that. I only write about things I’ve actually used, from lived experience, and I only recommend something when I genuinely think it helps. If something’s brilliant I’ll say so. If it has an annoying habit, I’ll say that too. I’ll review anything I’ve properly lived with. The aim is simple: help you buy what you actually need, and feel confident the review you’re reading is real and came from someone with similar needs to yours.
How I review
- I own it. Every review is of something I bought with my own money and use. My own home, my own experience, my own mistakes. Some photos are mine; where an image isn’t (a manufacturer or stock shot, say), it’s just there to show the product clearly.
- Facts and opinions kept apart. Specs come from the manufacturer; opinions come from living with it, and I label which is which.
- The good and the annoying. Every review has a “skip if…” section, because nothing is right for everyone.
- No fake urgency. No invented discounts or countdown timers. Prices move, so I point you to the current listing.
- Commission never decides the verdict. If I wouldn’t buy it again, the review says so.
